About This Web Site

This web site has all of the handouts and Mathematica notebooks for the course. All text files are in pdf which means that your browser will open them with Acrobat Reader when you click on them. You will need version 4 of the reader. It is available as a free download from Adobe. Once the file has been opened by Acrobat Reader, you can read it on the screen, print out a copy, or save it as file on your disk.

The movies on this web site require QuickTime. This may be downloaded for either the Mac OS or a Windows environment from Apple. When you click on a movie, it will be downloaded and played by QuickTime.

Some of the files for download (the Mathematica Tutorial for example) are in compressed form. For the Mac OS the files are in sit form and for Windows they are in zip form. For a free download of the latest version of the Aladdin Expander to decompress these files, click here.

If you click on a Mathematica notebook on the web site, your browser will download the notebook to your desktop, and then open Mathematica and display the notebook. The requirements for this to happen are that you have Mathematica installed on your machine, and that your browser knows to open files of type nb with Mathematica. You can tell your browser about Mathematica and nb files through the Preferences option. In the interests of saving space and decreasing download times, most of the Mathematica notebooks are stored in unexecuted form. To restore the output, you can simply evaluate the notebook after you have downloaded it.

The web site is organized in a self-explanatory way. The first page that you see will have links to all other materials. In addition, the first page has a bulletin board which will be used for announcements about the course. Please check the bulletin board frequently, as it may contain important information such as changes in due dates, changes in office hours, or corrections to homework problems.
