Fall Picnic 2009
ASME will be kicking off the school year with the annual Fall Picnic on Friday, September 25th, 2009, starting at around 4:00 PM. The picnic will be at the Roundhouse at Genesee Valley Park, a short walk (5-10 minutes) from campus. Hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, chips, cookies, and drinks will be served. The event is department-wide, so all mechanical engineering students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to attend (you don't need to be an ASME member to come). The picnic is a great opportunity to get to know other people in the department. It will be very casual, so feel free to stop by anytime after 4. Stay for a few minutes or for the whole afternoon!
If you're not sure how to get to the Roundhouse (or if you'd prefer to walk over en masse), ASME members will be leading a walking group from ITS. Meet at the bus stop in front of the library at 4:00 PM.

Egg Drop
The ASME Egg Drop will be in Wilson Commons at 3:00 PM on Friday, 2/20/09 (participants must arrive at 2:30 PM). We'll drop the eggs from the fourth floor balcony to the first floor. The challenge is to devise a vehicle that will safely carry the egg to the floor, while minimizing the number of materials used and maximizing the time your vehicle remains airborne. All students (all majors welcome!) are encouraged to participate and/or watch! Scoring will be as follows:
Score = (Hang time in seconds) + (Target bonus points) - (Number of materials used, not including the egg).
Detailed rules can be found here. If you have any questions, contact an ASME officer or e-mail uroch.asme (at) gmail.com.
Update: Thanks to all of the competitors and spectators for coming out to the Egg Drop! These were the results:
First Place: Jesse Cramer and Michael Hua
Second Place: Brent Gordon
Third Place: Dustin Canzonieri

Second Place: Team "Bacon" - UR Swimmers
Third Place: Team "PFDWT" - Livonia High School
Longest Hangtime: Team "PFDWT"

ASME Fall Picnic
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers will host its annual fall picnic at Genesee Valley Park on Friday, September 19th, beginning at around 4:00 PM. We've reserved the Roundhouse pavilion at GVP for the event, and there will be plenty of hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, snacks and beverages for everyone to enjoy. The picnic is department-wide -- so all mechanical engineering students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend. It's a great way to meet new people in the department and enjoy an afternoon with friends!
If you're not sure how to get to the Roundhouse, ASME members will be meeting at ITS at 4:00 pm to walk over together.

Fall Social Event w/ Design Competition
We hope you enjoyed Thanksgiving break! In case you didn't get enough of ASME, we're having a general information meeting and our fall social event this Friday (Nov. 30 in Hopeman 224 of course!). The event begins at 7:00pm with our discussing ASME activities and an introduction of our board.
Then at 7:30, we give you snacks and begin our first puzzle challenge. This is the first in a series of these challenges, where everyone is given simple materials and use them to build towards a goal we set. I would tell you more but you'll have to come to the event to find out what we are making.
Finally, after a break, we'll meet back at GVP at 10:30 for some ice skating. We'll spot you for getting in (FREE admission!) and you can bring your own skates or rent them (this requires real money, but under $5). Feel free to come to any of the sections of the event by themselves, depending on what you want to do.
See you there!

Sixth Annual ASME Jack-O-Launcher
Be ready to send pumpkins high in the sky, because the annual pumpkin launch is here. The event begins at 2pm in the Wilson Quad, and we start firing pumkpins across the quad at 2:30. For those of you who don't know much about the launch, we invite anyone to come build a mechanically powered launcher to shoot as far or as accurately as possible. We explain the launcher in detail in our rules form. Our major upgrade from last years' rules is the launcher weight vs. distance challenge, where your launcher will score better the lighter it is.
But don't be scared by this intimidating list; we're always glad to see new launchers...even if they shoot backwards. If you plan to build a launcher, please contact us soon so we can sign you up. We will also spend our afternoons on Saturday and Sunday the 27th and 28th building launchers. Come on by to Hopeman where you can borrow our tools and build your last-minute-launcher.

Jack-O-Launcher Done until Next Year
It was another great and safe Jack-O-Launching event for the Rochester campus. Student teams came prepared on Friday with there machines and contraptions ready to show people their hard work and more importantly have some great fun! The teams this year were diverse, with representatives from most class years, a couple graduates, a team from RIT, and even an entry from some middle schoolers. Unlike recent years this event was set-up for long range and short range accuracy. This provided a new twist in the competition and proved to make the task a little harder than previous years. All in all everyone had a good time and we hope to see you again next year.

Fall Picnic up in Smoke!
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers enjoyed a beautiful afternoon out in the sun on Friday September 15th. Well, maybe the forecast was overcast with a slight rain, but the faculty, professors, and students of the mechanical engineering department did enjoy a wonderful afternoon at the Genesee Valley Park pavilion. The first department wide event of the new semester the ASME Fall Picnic proved to be a great success. For all seventy who attended the social event, they were rewarded with hamburgers, hot dogs, beverages and of course the opportunity to relax. Students met at ITS around 5pm and many stayed late into the night.

ASME Rocks Fall Activities Fair
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers had a great showing at the annual student fall activities fair September 8th. Students enjoyed the afternoon off from class as the perused the many tables. Among the crowd favorites were the Strong Jugglers, the Mini Baja club, and of course the pumpkin launcher drew many to the ASME table. More than twenty students expressed interest in joining the international group, as well as many students curiosity towards the pumpkin launcher itself. To learn more about ASME as a society you can visit the ASME national website.
