A Joint Faculty Position shared between the Mechanical Engineering
Department and The Institute of Optics

The Edmund A. Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Rochester invites applications for a joint, tenured/tenure track, faculty position in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and in The Institute of Optics. Applicants must be dedicated investigators with outstanding accomplishments in a subset of the areas of opto-mechanics, finite element analysis applied to optical systems, precision engineering, advanced optical materials, modern optical design or optical manufacturing. Junior and senior applicants with strong qualifications will be considered. Preference will be given to applicants whose research interests lie in the area of both experimental and computational opto-mechanical system design.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop groundbreaking new courses in opto-mechanics and precision engineering design which will be shared between the two departments. This faculty appointment is expected to provide leadership as an independent, extramurally funded investigator and to participate in both departmental teaching programs.

The University of Rochester is embarking on new directions in the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Science with targeted growth in areas related to interactions within the Institute of Optics’ new Robert E. Hopkins Center for Optical Design and Engineering. The Hopeman Engineering building is adjacent to the new Goergen Optics-Biomedical Engineering building. Thus, we offer an exceptionally rich environment for engineering, entrepreneurial and basic science collaboration. Review of candidates will continue until the position is filled.

A Joint Faculty Position shared between Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering

The Edmund A. Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Rochester invites applications for a joint tenured/tenure-track faculty position in the Departments of Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Biomedical Engineering (BME) in the Edmund A. Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Applicants at the assistant professor level are preferred, but exceptional candidates at all ranks will be considered. Applicants having research interests in biosolid or biofluid mechanics that complement existing strengths at the University of Rochester in areas such as molecular, cellular, and tissue mechanics, cardiovascular mechanics, musculoskeletal mechanics, medical imaging (including biomedical ultrasound), or biomaterials are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate is expected to have exceptional potential to establish a strong interdisciplinary research program and to teach innovative graduate and undergraduate courses for both the Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Departments.

The Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is a short walk from the University of Rochester’s Medical Center and School of Medicine and Dentistry, one of the original recipients of an NIH award ($40M) to establish a Clinical and Translational Science Institute. An exceptionally rich and highly collaborative environment exists for both basic and clinical research.

Review of candidates will commence August 30, 2009 and will continue until the position is filled.
